What is Pilates?

Developed in the 1920's by the legendary physical trainer Joseph H. Pilates, this unique program is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Breath and tension release are also a part of the Pilates workout thus leaving you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Based on resistive exercise it is directly applicable to dance, not surprisingly, some of the first people to use Pilates were dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine. Now, it is used by all walks of life. We are very fortunate to have a well-established Pilates studio here in Las Vegas. Pilates by Dolly has been here in Las Vegas since 1987. It is Las Vegas' Premier Pilates Studio, developed by Dolly Kelepecz. There are presently two locations in Las Vegas one, on the west side of town and the other the east side of town.

Imagine an exercise program that you look forward to that engages you, and that leaves you refreshed and alert with a feeling of physical and mental well-being. The Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) system of body conditioning will do all this and more. Pilates is low impact and the perfect workout for female or male. The body is a series of joints and Pilates is extremely gentle on the joints, making it a perfect workout for every body type. Our joints will start to reflect over use problems as we age and because of the intrinsic work of Pilates, it is the perfect joint stabilizer. If your joints are stabilized properly you will eliminate pain and physical stress to your body. Although Pilates does not burn fat, it tones muscle, which reshapes the body: thus losing inches and clothing sizes. A Pilates body is limber and long with narrow hips and very strong abdominal muscles. Because the technique emphasizes fluid movements rather than short contractions, muscles become defined but not overdeveloped. It is said to so improve posture that devotees claimed they added a few inches to their height. When we reach maturity our needs change physically and mentally. We also become less flexible, with less agility, losing our ability to stay on balance. The focus on lengthening and stretching your muscles will not only make you more agile but will relieve stress both in your body and in your mind. The specific breathing patterns will also help you to eliminate the mental stresses of the day. You can apply the Pilates techniques of posture to your regular daily routine or workout. The bottom line is that this is the way to achieve your maximum flexibility and finally get a flat stomach. If you absolutely insist on sweat- drenched workouts that leave you with an exhausted body, do not pass on Pilates. It is an internal workout and, you will achieve much more than you ever dreamed.
